Service Learning

Faith in Action

We believe service is more than an activity - it is an expression of our Catholic faith and a way of life. Inspired by the Gospel, our students are encouraged to recognize the dignity of every person, care for God's creation, and make a meaningful difference in their local and global communities.

Beginning in the primary grades and continuing through middle school, students participate in age-appropriate service opportunities that foster compassion, responsibility, and leadership. Through classroom discussions, hands-on projects, and meaningful reflection, students discover that even small acts of kindness and generosity can have a lasting impact.

Each grade learns about and supports organizations that address the needs of others, while our middle school students further develop a lifelong commitment to service through community service projects, service-learning field experiences, and personal reflection. As part of the Middle School curriculum, students are also required to complete annual service hours, encouraging them to put their faith into action while developing a lifelong commitment to serving others. Students in Grades 6–8 complete increasing service hour requirements each year, culminating in 15 service hours during 8th Grade. Students preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation complete additional service as part of their faith journey.

School-Wide Service Projects

Throughout the school year, St. Finn Barr families come together to support a variety of service initiatives that benefit organizations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. These projects provide meaningful opportunities for students and families to live out our shared values of faith, compassion, and service.

Some of our annual service projects include:

  • Holiday Giving Tree - Supporting local foster youth through our partnership with SF CASA.
  • Thanksgiving Food Drive - Collecting food and donations for the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank.
  • St. Anthony's Coat Drive - Providing warm clothing for individuals and families in need.
  • San Francisco Firefighters Toy Drive - Helping ensure every child experiences the joy of the holiday season.
  • Spread the Love Peanut Butter & Jelly Drive - Supporting the Saint Francis Living Room with essential food donations.
  • Peace Parade - During Catholic Schools Week, each grade celebrates a service organization through a colorful parade that highlights the importance of peace, compassion, and giving back.

In addition to these school-wide initiatives, students regularly participate in classroom and grade-level service projects that respond to the needs of our local community and reinforce the values they learn each day.

Forming Hearts for Service

Our goal is not simply to complete service projects, but to cultivate hearts that recognize opportunities to help others wherever they may be. By connecting faith with action, St. Finn Barr students develop empathy, gratitude, leadership, and a lifelong commitment to serving others - living our mission of preparing young, diverse minds for the future while sharing Christ's love with the world.
